This won’t be an in-depth analysis on the 2017 Oscar nominations. There are plenty of other outlets you can go to for that. This is just a quick look at what gave me relief or took me by surprise for good or ill in the eight main categories.
BEST PICTURE
Let’s just get this out of the way up top. I’m so happy Deadpool did not snag a nomination here. I think the film is a lot of fun, but Oscar-worthy? No. (The fact the Oscars nowadays basically treat comedies like Cousin Oliver is a topic for another day.) If you’re going to nominate a 2016 superhero film for the big prize, Captain America: Civil War is the one that’s worthy.
On the flip side, I am disappointed Martin Scorsese’s passion project Silence didn’t get more love on the whole.
BEST DIRECTOR
Yes, Scorsese’s lack of a nomination makes me unbelievably sad. Was the snub worth it to welcome back Mel Gibson from purgatory?
Also, if no Scorsese, how about David Mackenzie for Hell or High Water?
BEST ACTOR
I can’t help but wonder if the wrong Andrew Garfield performance was singled out. Either way, it’s nice to see him nominated.
Viggo Mortensen was rumored to be on the shortlist for Captain Fantastic, but I didn’t want to believe it till I saw the nominations myself. I’m very happy he’s a contender. He won’t win, but I like he’s been invited to the party.
BEST ACTRESS
Yes to Isabelle Huppert and Ruth Negga scoring noms. And for the amazing Emily Blunt not securing what would have been her first nomination on the unworthy The Girl On the Train.
A big eyeroll to Meryl Streep (whom I love) knocking out the more deserving Amy Adams (whose work in Arrival was stunning) thanks to one hell of a Golden Globes speech.
BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR
Michael Shannon getting nominated for Nocturnal Animals over co-star Aaron Taylor-Johnson? I’m down with it. Despite Taylor-Johnson giving one of his strongest performances ever, Shannon owns every scene he’s in.
BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS
While some predicted Greta Gerwig would sneak in for her turn in 20th Century Women, unfortunately it was not meant to be.
BEST ADAPTED SCREENPLAY
I would have loved to see Jeff Nichols grab a slot for Loving, which he also directed.
BEST ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY
I have neither quibbles nor regrets. Go figure.
The 2017 Academy Awards will air live at 8:30 p.m. ET/5:30 p.m. PT Sunday, Feb. 26 on ABC.
