So ... it's a show? It's a lifestyle. It's a religion.
If you love 'Gilmore Girls', then you’ve most likely started your annual rewatch. (All the cool kids do it in the fall.) The perfect time to list my 20 favorite episodes
My love for Stars Hollow and its residents knows no bounds. I’ve been watching the show since it debuted on The WB way back on Oct. 5, 2000. I own the Gilmore Girls complete series box set, as well as A Year in the Life; not to mention I have the soundtrack on CD, along with other items in my collection. All this to say I’m not some random writer cashing in on the world’s love for Lorelai and Rory. Though does anyone really love Rory? Especially once she gets to Yale?
Over the course of 154 episodes, plus the four-part revival (I know the revival is horrifically painful; we are all saints for sitting through it each and every time), it’s become evident what episodes I love the most. I’d even say these are the best — notice seasons six and seven barely rate, and the revival is MIA.
So grab your favorite junk food and/or a cup of Luke’s famous coffee. If you’re looking for a mini-binge, then have I got the lineup for you. Just a heads up: I didn’t include the pilot though I do love it; feel free to add it … or not.
Writer’s note: This is a two-part feature. The first 10, in order by airdate, are below with the final 10 coming next time.
Kill Me Now (S1, Ep 3)
This is where the seeds for one of the best Gilmore relationships were planted. Rory spends the afternoon with Richard at the country club. It's hard to tell who ultimately had more fun.
Rory's Birthday Parties (S1, Ep 6)
Lorelai throws the best bashes. Sorry, Emily. I'll take a Stars Hollow shindig over one of your formal affairs every time. (Not even Rory's 21st birthday party at the Gilmore manse is as good as this.)
Rory's Dance (S1, Ep 9)
It's winter formal time at Chilton. However, this ep is all about the Gilmore mothers and daughters. Who cares about a dance when you have these spectacular Emily/Lorelai and Lorelai/Rory scenes?
Forgiveness and Stuff (S1, Ep 10)
Richard collapses! Luke makes Lorelai a disgusting Santa burger! Emily meets Luke! A Christmastime ep to remember.
Emily in Wonderland (S1, Ep 19)
A visit to Stars Hollow gives Kelly Bishop and Emily one helluva showcase. Plus, Independence Inn owner Mia pops up just in time for Emily to confront her about Lorelai & Rory's early years in town ... and ask for any photos of her girls from back then.
The Bracebridge Dinner (S2, Ep 10)
Another Christmastime ep. The townsfolk gathering at the Independence Inn for the aforementioned dinner is such a delight. Special shout out to the sleigh rides, Rune changing in the kitchen, and Miss Patty's costume-specific crush. Huzzah!
Richard in Stars Hollow (S2, Ep 12)
What a treat it is to have Richard hanging out with Lorelai all day. Her annoyance is our gain. It's a shame we didn't get more of him and Emily in Stars Hollow over the course of the show. Fun fact: The "You owe me!" scene featuring Emily and Lorelai is so me and my mom.
A-Tisket, A-Tasket (S2, Ep 13)
Basket bidding madness! Luke and Jess winning the baskets submitted by Lorelai and Rory is perfection. Sorry not sorry, Dean. Props to Kirk for price gouging Jackson after scoring Sookie's basket.
They Shoot Gilmores, Don't They? (S3, Ep 7)
Rory and Dean were finally put out of their misery (for now, at least) and Team Jess finally got the chance we had been begging for as a result. Beyond that, the dance marathon is a hoot with the townsfolk getting a chance to shine.
A Deep-Fried Korean Thanksgiving (S3, Ep 9)
Gilmore Girls largely ignored major holidays (looking at you, Christmas). Thankfully, they made one glorious exception with this Thanksgiving feast that is stuffed with revelations (Rory applied to Yale!), a beheaded chocolate turkey, a Thunderdome re-enactment, and a serving of tofurkey. Don’t forget the rolls!
NEXT TIME … Here’s a sneak peek at what you can look forward to regarding the second half of my list: Rory graduates! Will Luke and Lorelai just hold still? The ultimate Friday Night Dinner.
TALK FAST: I wanna hear what you think are the best episodes of Gilmore Girls. Hit me up with your faves while you're at it.
